Tan integradas en la trama están la fotografía y las interpretaciones, que los cambios de escena los suele marca un movimiento lateral de la cámara que culmina en un nuevo vestido de Maggie Cheung. También resultan muy sugestivos los boleros de Nat King Cole, cantando en español, que llevan la acción como en volandas. No por casualidad, la relación de la pareja protagonista es mostrada siempre a media luz y se da a la vista de todos en restaurantes, paseando por la calle… Toda una lección de elegancia en un momento en que una sensiblería epidérmica confunde amor, pasión, romance y magreo descarado. La transitoria compañía que se hacen los protagonistas les conviene, pues necesitan afecto; pero su sentido común y su calidad humana les hace comprender que lo más sensato es dejarlo, aunque resulte doloroso. Kar-Wai rueda por instinto y realiza después un audaz trabajo de depuración de todo lo superfluo. De ahí que sus películas no suelan rebasar los 90 minutos.
